Stage Twenty Three –Villar de Mazarife to Astorga

31.2  km
October 31, 2011

Another 30+ km day!
We all slept in till 7:40 am. It was a mad dash to get packed and get a little breakfast and start out on a long walk today.  The lady at the albergue took our pictures outside. Chantelle was up and long gone.
I walked alternating with Pam, Christian, Gabriel and alone for the whole day. A pretty flat walk today past irrigated corn fields and farms. Today as Pam and I walked along we could see a Belgium woman stopped on the trail ahead of us. She waited as we caught up. Apparently there was a dog at the farm ahead that came barking out at her and she was afraid to pass. She wasn't sure what to do. Me, being an alpha dog, walked ahead to see what this dog's problem was. When he saw us approach, he retreated up a small hill and watched us pass with no more barking. The dog made the woman feel a little silly because now he appeared quite docile. He just wanted us to know it was his farm we were passing through.
It was a beautiful day to walk, not too hot and no wind. We arrived in Astorga just as it started to rain. Pam and I met Ken (Irish), Andrew (Canadian), and Bernardo (Austrian), at a nice authentic Italian restaurant. I had cannelloni. What a nice change. Back at the albergue, I waited for my clothes to be washed and dried by the hospitalarios. Pam ended up socializing on the patio with the guys, listening to some old tunes. I was too tired and cold to socialize, so went off to bed.
